Racing: Quake fund boosted

A gala dinner auction organised by the Auckland Racing Club on Sunday raised about $600,000 for the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

"It was an amazing result. The money will go to the Prime Minister's Christchurch earthquake fund," Andrew Castles, the racing manager of the ARC, said.

A service to the stallion Zabeel, donated by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, fetched $122,000. The buyer was Dato Yap Kim San, a principal of Raffles Farm, Cambridge.

A service to Exceed And Excel, donated by Darley (Australia), fetched $76,000. Bob Emery was the buyer.

A framed set of the colours worn by Black Caviar in her Newmarket Handicap win last month was bought for $34,500 by Bevan Laming, the Queensland trainer formerly based at Riccarton, bidding through an agent.

Rock Cakes may prove the best of four representatives of the Balcairn kennels of Dave and Jean Fahey in the $5000 Dunedin Cup at the Otago Greyhound Racing Club meeting at Forbury Park today.

They also have Awesome Bender, Speed Ticket and Watmough in the race.

Awesome Bender won at Wanganui on Friday. He has won four of his six starts over the distance, 545m, at Forbury Park.

Watmough won over 645m at Addington on Thursday and Rock Cakes has won his last two starts.

TAB bookmaker Paul Cook said last night he would open Rock Cakes as favourite, slightly ahead of Awesome Bender.

Frankel remained unbeaten in six starts when he won the Two Thousand Guineas by six lengths at Newmarket, the BPA reports.

It was the biggest margin since Tudor Minstrel won by eight lengths in 1947.

Frankel, a Galileo colt, led over the mile in the hands of Tom Queally.

His trainer, Henry Cecil, had won the race with Bolkonski (1975) and Wollow (1976).

Cecil is favouring the St James Palace Stakes (one mile) for 3yr-olds at Ascot on June 14 as the next start for Frankel in preference to the Derby at Epsom.

"The final decision will be the prince's [owner Khalid Abdullah]. I think when he [Frankel] gets a bit stronger, there's every chance he'll get a mile and a-quarter."

Mahmood Al Zarooni, who has been a trainer in his own right for a year, won the One Thousand Guineas with Blue Bunting.

Zarooni has had considerable success in his native Dubai.

Blue Bunting (16-1) represented Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team after White Moonstone was withdrawn. Blue Bunting (by Dynaformer) had won over 1600m as a 2yr-old.

It was the 14th classic win for jockey Frankie Dettori.

Blue Bunting is now favourite for the Oaks with bookmakers Boylesport and Victor Chandler.

Godolphin won both classics with Kazzia in 2002.
