Dunn grabbed the lead at Oamaru with about 2300m to go in his 3000m assignment on December 5 and jammed on the brakes, stacking his rivals up before sprinting the last 800m in 56 seconds - a rare sectional on a grass track.
But a similar scenario is unlikely for the 5yr-old this afternoon.
He picked up two wins on the West Coast circuit and will start tomorrow's $12,000 Oamaru Cup off 30m.
‘‘It's definitely hard, but he is generally a good beginner, so hopefully he stays that way,'' Dunn said.
‘‘It's still not going to be easy, that 30m. But he's done that at Westport and seemed to handle that all right in a quick time.''
Putting aside the successful West Coast mission, where Cullect A Guinness followed up his two wins with a third in the Reefton Cup, Dunn was even more pleased with the gelding's fourth behind Maverick at Addington on Friday.
‘‘I thought it was really good,'' Dunn said.
‘‘He got held up when Hug The Wind got pushed three-wide, so I was rapt with his run.
‘‘He goes very good on the grit, but he seems to be growing a leg on grass.''
If Cullect A Guinness gets away well off the 30m, Dunn is happy to consider his options if the pace slackens.
‘‘I'll be chasing so he's good enough to do some work, but we'll play it by ear and judge the tempo of the race, really.''
Mach Cruiser joins his stable-mate in the Oamaru Cup after winning on a slushy track at Rangiora on January 3.
‘‘He's come through the West Coast all right and I backed him up for a short turnaround to Rangiora, so he had four runs in eight days. He's had a wee freshen up and he's working well.
‘‘He's the sort of horse who, if he gets the right sort of run in that field, he generally runs on and goes a great race, but he does need that right run.''Callenberg (race 7) will find his opposition a little easier, and he has a front-line draw to assist him in the junior drivers' mobile pace.
‘‘It's definitely a drop back in class to what he has been racing,'' he said.
‘‘ I know you've got a couple drawn on the second row who are good, but he's drawn handy to lead or be thereabouts on the pace, which suits his style of racing.''
Callenberg's fifth at Motukarara on Sunday continued his good form after two placings in his previous two starts.
‘‘I was actually quite pleased with his run on Sunday because he got a decent check at the start and over-raced quite bad, so it was quite a good run to finish as closely as he did,'' Dunn said.
Dunn rates Music (race 11) as the best of the rest of his Woodend Beach team at Oamaru, although he was pleased with Extra Guinness (race 10), a half-brother of Cullect A Guinness.
‘‘Extra Guinness had a miss the other day at Addington but his work since has been spot on,'' he said.
