Brad Williamson (17), who has been race driving for four months, landed the outsider of the field, Motu Speedy Star, winner of the $14,000 Waimate Cup yesterday at odds of 88-to-one.
Motu Speedy Star was having his second start for Oamaru trainer Eion Latimer after changing stables two months ago. The 7yr-old is owned by Opawa Racing Limited operated by Robin Wales.
Motu Speedy Star had been off the winning list since April last year. The Village Jasper gelding won four races when trained by Ian Cameron at Fernside.
"Robin Wales offered me the horse as he felt a change of scenery might turn his form around," Latimer said.
Latimer had taken Jaspers Blue Jean for the same owner in May last year after the gelding had won two races for Cameron.
Jaspers Blue Jean won two races within four months of changing stables and the Village Jasper gelding was then bought by the Latimer family.
It was the sixth driving win for Williamson, a brother of Nathan and Matthew and son of Phil, who have all made their mark as reinsmen.
• Ken Barron continued a good innings when he drove Red and Black, Oursue and Rangi Rule to win yesterday.
Barron trained and drove Franco Hemmingway and Captain Webber to win at Alexandra Park on Friday night and he trained Monifieth, who won at Invercargill on Thursday. He trains Red and Black for Les and Pat Fowler, of Timaru.
Fowler has been in the ownership of five horses that have won at the annual Waimate Trotting Club meetings.
Fowler was living at Makikihi and co-owner with his brother, Jock, when he won with Lumber Jack, trained by Richard Brosnan at the 1981 Waimate meeting. They won the following year with Boulder Creek trained by Clem Scott.
The Waimate meeting was at Oamaru when Fowler won with Spotover Holmes in 1996.
The meeting was back at Waimate when he won the 1999 Waimate Cup with Foden Holmes, trained by John Lischner.
Barron joined Lischner as a training partner, then carried on with the stable when Lischner retired.
Monifieth, who was having his first start, has been left in the care of Clark Barron for another race in Southland.
Chancellor Cullen is a newcomer for the Barron stable at the Auckland meeting this week. He is one of four horses Barron has in Auckland.
• Trainer Greg Hope was pleased to win with Gaylee's Delight yesterday. He races the 3yr-old filly with his uncle Les Hope, of Blenheim.
"Les has been told he only has a short time to live so it was good for him," Hope said.
