Matthew Cameron is making the trip from Matamata mainly to ride Croix Du Sud at Oamaru today.

Cameron has not ridden at Oamaru for five years.

He rode Croix Du Sud to win at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton this month. The 5yr-old mare is trained by Jason Bridgman, who operates stables at Matamata and Rangiora.

Cameron linked with Bridgman three months ago and he has since ridden seven winners for the stable.

Cameron, who turned 25 on Monday, was an apprentice with New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock when he last rode at Oamaru in July 2006.

He had second placings on Madison Amber, Star Alliance and King Of Jacks.

He rode 60 winners that season and finished second to Kelly Myers among the apprentices. His winning tally now stands at 324.

Selenus (race 1) and Dozintmateranyway (race 4) are other top chances for Cameron today.

The Jon Sargent-trained Selenus has won his last two starts at Riccarton and Oamaru.

Dozintmateranyway was a winner at Oamaru two starts back, then staged a big run for fourth at Riccarton. He was ridden by Ryan Bishop, the Ashburton jockey, who said he could not secure enough rides to make the trip to Oamaru a worthwhile mission.

Lisa Whelan, the leading apprentice in the first month of the new season with 10 wins, is back in action today after being on vacation this week. She has been skiing in Queenstown, spending time with her mother, Frances, who is visiting from Ireland.

Whelan can claim 3kg for Anahera which could give him the edge in the open 1200m today. The free-going Anahera has won his last two starts at Oamaru both over the 1200m distance with useful times of 1.09.26 and 1.10.78.

He has won six races since joining the Ashburton stable of Daniel Champion and Kezia Murphy 13 months ago.

"He just loves the small tracks," Champion said.
