El Nino was within 0.6sec of the New Zealand and race record set by Tribute in 2004.
Mapua Legend held on for second.
El Nino had been placed in two of his other three starts.

"I had wanted to win the Kindergarten Stakes since my cousin, Bill Auld, won the race with Rarest (1991)," Bob McLean said.
Rarest had been raced on lease from the Grices by Auld, Lyndsay Moyle, Morton Potbury and Ken Little and trained by Allan Devery and Henry Skinner.
Rarest was by Rashad out of Barbara Del, who won the 1971 NZ Welcome Stakes and Leonard Memorial and two other races from six starts as a 2yr-old when trained by Doody Townley.
Equation is out of Sweet Elaine by Soky's Atom from Lady Barbara, by Lordship from Barbara Del, who was bred by the Grices.

Springbank Richard set a track record for a trotter over 3200m of 4.07.1 when he won by three lengths.
"It was good to get that one," Alister Smith, his part-owner said.

Roman Gladiator has been disqualified from first placing in the Southland Country Cups Final at Invercargill on April 26 after a Judicial Control Authority hearing into his positive swab.
No further penalty was imposed on Robin Swain, the trainer of Roman Gladiator, who lost a winning stake of $18,500.
Here Comes Soky is now the winner of the race.
Roman Gladiator tested positive to dimethyl sulphoxide.
Evidence was heard that Roman Gladiator was administered with dmso for a respiratory infection by Gore veterinarian Ewan Miller on the instruction of veterinarian Brendan Bell.
The administration was made two days before the race on the understanding that the level of dmso had a withholding period of that time.
"There is widespread understanding among veterinarians in NZ that it was acceptable to give up to 200ml of dmso to a horse at least 48 hours before a race," Bell said.
Swain had not appeared on any charge in connection with a positive swab in 30 years' association with racing.
"The disqualification of the horse is mandatory and any further financial penalty on Swain would be against the clear principles of natural justice," the finding of the JCA stated.
The case was heard by Nigel Skelt and Dave Steel.
