Kiwi Ingenuity bettered the 1.53.5 record set by the mare Scuse Me at Alexandra Park in 1998 and equalled by Auckland Reactor at Cambridge in January.
It was the ninth win in 18 starts for Kiwi Ingenuity, who took her stake earnings to $376,479.
She has also had four seconds and two third placings.
Trained and driven by Robbie Holmes, of Leithfield Beach, Kiwi Ingenuity had won the group one New Zealand Breeders' Stakes at Addington in January for husband and wife Ladbrooks breeders Hamish Scott and Dr Kim Lawson, who race the daughter of Christian Cullen and Kiwi Express with their company Equine Investments Ltd and Abbey Smith, of Christchurch.
Smith (30) took up the offer of a leased share in the mare this season.
She earlier raced Smooth Christian with Scott and Lawson.
She works for Scott, an accountant.
His wife is a general practitioner in Christchurch.
"The horses are very much Hamish's thing and he has taken me along," Lawson said.
Scott had his first taste of success in 1993 with Shepherd's Purse, who won a race at Gore.
He was in the G. R. I. syndicate who had the mare with Wayne Adams at Invercargill.
Scott bought Kiwi Express, the dam of Kiwi Ingenuity, on the advice of one of his clients, Simon Pavlovich, who trained and drove the Miles McCool-Another Kiwi mare to win two races at Wyndham from five starts early in 2000.
She was retired to stud with a leg problem.
Kiwi Ingenuity is her third foal.
She has also left Kiwis Can Fly, who is at stud after winning four races from seven starts and taking a 1.58.1 mile record in a time trial.
Holmes trained Kiwis Can Fly, who had a recurring tendon problem.
Rojam Cullen, a 3yr-old brother to Kiwi Ingenuity, is having his second start in race 6 at Ashburton today.
He finished third at Addington on May 21.
Rojam Cullen, who was sold at the premier yearling sale, is trained by Ken Barron.
Scott now has 28 horses and he is considering buying another property to accommodate them.
Kiwi Ingenuity will be spelled and aimed at the Miracle Mile at Menangle, near Sydney, on November 29.
Holmes said he would nominate her for the New Zealand Cup on November 10.
Kiwi Ingenuity, who came from back in the field and ran her last 800m in 55.1 and 400m in 26.8, was racing without spreaders for the first time.
Smoken Up set an Australian mile record of 1.51.9 for a mile at Menangle 12 months ago soon after the 1200m track was opened.
Changeover won there in 1.53.4 in April. Auckland Reactor, who won the division for 4yr-old entires and geldings on Saturday in 1.53.8, is also a contender for the Miracle Mile.
He will be spelled for six weeks.
His target is the New Zealand Cup.
"I was worried before the race that he may have been feeling the effects of a busy season, but I had no concerns once under way. He was completely relaxed," Mark Purdon, his co-trainer and driver, said.
Auckland Reactor took his record to 24 wins and two seconds from 27 starts for $1,440,656 in stakes.
He had 13 wins and two seconds in 16 starts this season for $1,112,556 after being bought for $NZ4 million by a syndicate.
Auckland Reactor has won five group one races this season.
He has equalled Christian Cullen, who won 12 races as a 4yr-old in 1998-99.
John Curtin, the Auckland manager of the syndicate, said Auckland Reactor would have the opportunity to race for $8 million in stakes in New Zealand Australia and the United States in the 12 months from October.
Curtin, who has negotiated the sale of numerous horses to the US, said a New Zealand horse was capable of improving a mile time by six seconds in the United States through the difference in tracks and sulkies.
Auckland Reactor ran the fastest final 400m on Saturday of 25.4.
"You wouldn't see that time anywhere in the world," Curtin said.
The entire led and ran his last 800m in 54.6.
The world race record for a mile is 1.46.8 set by Holborn Hanover at The Meadowlands in 2006 as a 5yr-old and equalled by Somebeachsomewhere as a 3yr-old at Lexington last year.
Both are mile tracks compared with 1200m at Ashburton.
It is intended that Mark Purdon take Auckland Reactor to the United States.
Auckland Reactor was the major attraction on Saturday, with the crowd flocking to the inside rail of the galloping track to see him in action. Purdon and training partner Grant Payne also won group one races with the 3yr-old trotter, Pocaro and 3yr-old filly Joyfuljoy on Saturday to take their tally to a record 10 for the season and 43 all time.
The stable also had five placings on Saturday from 18 representatives and amassed $413,000 from the $1.5million offered.
