King Charlie, who has not raced for a year, was successful at the Addington trials yesterday.

King Charlie started from 40m in the one-win plus heat for trotters over 2600m and won by 10 lengths.

He finished second to One Over Kenny in a group one $100,000 race at his last start at Addington last April.

"He limped back to his box after the Addington race and was found to have a tear in a hind suspensory," Nigel McGrath, his trainer, said yesterday.

"He was operated on two days later and spent 10 months in a paddock.

"He has had two workouts and after his trial win I am looking to start him off again at Addington on Friday week," McGrath said.

The Monarchy 6yr-old has recorded 11 wins from 37 starts.

Romulus showed he had maintained his high level of fitness when he beat Sleepy Tripp by a nose in the 3-8win and faster heat for pacers over the 1950m (mobile).

He ran the distance in 2.29 (a 2.02.9 mile rate), the last 800 in 55.9, the final 400 in 27.4.

Romulus has won four of his last six starts.

He was third to Tennis Ball and Auditor General at his last start on April 9 at Addington.

Ngaire Margaret and Betty Cuthbert qualified as trotters 10 seconds under the required time yesterday.

The two were separated by a nose at the end of 2600m in 3.29.4.

Ngaire Margaret is a 3yr-old daughter of Sundon and Wheels On Fire, trained by Brent Weaver.

Betty Cuthbert is a 3yr-old filly by Continentalman from Hurling in the Andrew Stuart stable.
