The Cromwell Cup could be the coming of age for Dr Dee Bee and Toni Direen tomorrow.

The pair combine for the 21st time on race day in the 2030m feature, as Direen continues her association with runners from Jan Hay's Ashburton stable.

''She's been putting me on a bit and I've ridden a couple of winners for her,'' Direen said.

''I've stuck with Dr Dee Bee through since I first started.''

The horse-and-rider pairing have won four times and also finished a close second in the 2013 Timaru Cup.

Their most recent outing together was at Ashburton on January 24 over 2100m, and Direen feels the 70m drop in distance should be helpful tomorrow.

''He went huge at Gore over 2000m and at Ashburton he went over 2100m and just blew out over the last 100m,'' Direen said.

''So back to the 2030 at Cromwell at the leaders' track, he should be hard to beat, I reckon.''

The son of Captain Rio also gets some much-needed weight relief, dropping back from 59kg in his last two starts to 57.5kg, with Direen's 1kg claim taking his carried weight down to 56.5kg.

His draw of 1 in the small field will help and Direen thinks Evancho (race 4) should be taking up a similar front-running role.

''She's as honest as anything. She'll be up on the speed and she should be hard to beat again.''

Mels Evie (race 6) is the third Jan Hay runner for Direen. She meets a smart rating 75 field including Miss Alice and Brah Spring and will jump from barrier 1.

''She dropped back from the mile back to the 1200m at Riccarton and went really good,'' she said.

''I think the 1400m at Cromwell will be perfect and she has a good draw.''

Direen's other ride is Drumreims (race 7), who has transferred from Wingatui trainer Terry Kennedy to Leda Beck at Winton.
