Racing: Jones to drive Monaghan

Mark Jones has gained the drive on Monaghan in the New Zealand Kindergarten Stakes at Wyndham on Saturday.

Dexter Dunn, who has driven Monaghan in his three races for wins at Ashburton (New Zealand Sapling Stakes) and Winton, is required for Orl Black, trained by Cran Dalgety.

Orl Black, who won a mile trial in 2.00.3 at Ashburton on February 8, is having his first start.

Orl Black is a half-brother by In The Pocket to Black Cracker, a last-start winer at Waikouaiti.

Dunn drove Le Sol to win the Kindergarten last year.

Mark Purdon has the drive on Australian 3yr-old Excel Stride at Alexandra Park tomorrow.

Excel Stride ran second to Sushi Sushi in the Victoria Derby at his last start.

An average of $13,992 was returned for 159 lots sold on the second day of the premier sale of standardbreds in Christchurch on Tuesday.

The clearance rate was 75% and the aggregate $1,679,000.

Trevor Lindsay, of Perth, was the buyer of the top-priced lot, the Mach Three-Asabella filly sold for $52,000.

The third day of the sale scheduled for yesterday was cancelled following the earthquake in Christchurch on Tuesday.

Addington Raceway sustained moderate damage in the earthquake on Tuesday.

Shane Gloury, the chief executive, said cracks appeared in the home straight and there was damage to the top floor of the main stand.
