Indian Giver, trained by David and Catherine Butt, won the Cup Prelude (2400m) yesterday from a 10m handicap.
It was his third win in as many starts in a fresh campaign.
The Tinted Cloud 4yr-old is off 20m over 3000m tomorrow.
Indian Giver won his first three starts late in 2006.
He was then away from racing for 16 months after he fractured a front pastern.
He had screws inserted in the pastern.
Indian Giver is raced by friends Bill Caithie, Lawrence Chan and Philip Sue, all of Wellington on lease from Ashburton breeders Keith and Bevan Grice.
"A friend, Nick Serafim, knew the breeders and put us in touch," Caithie said.
Indian Giver is out of Monica Clinton (Soky's Atom-Karena), an unraced sister to winners Born Famous, Henry The Eighth, Fraud Squad and Tom Pepper and a half-sister to Alice In Wonderland (seven wins).
Messrs Caithie, Chan and Sue have a 2yr-old half-sister by Live Or Die to Indian Giver in the Butt stable.
Hurricane Anvil and Anvils A Coaster won at their first starts for the Butts yesterday.
The pair are owned by Small Car World Ltd, operated by Graham Beirne, of Christchurch.
Both horses had failed to measure up when tried by Nigel McGrath and had not raced for several weeks.
