Racing: Hazlett eyes return

Tom Hazlett is viewing a return to race riding at Wanganui on Thursday week.

The Ashburton jumps jockey broke his left leg in February when kicked by a horse.

He had the plaster removed last Wednesday. He will attend a doctor for a medical clearance today to resume riding work.

The injury has ruled Hazlett out of the Great Western Steeplechase, a race he has won three times in the past six years.

• Toro, the winner of his last two starts for Wingatui owner-trainer Andrew Taggart, has been put aside.

"It was always the plan to put him out until the spring," Taggart said.

The 4yr-old has won at Wingatui and Riccarton.

Makfi, at odds of 33-to-one, won the Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket, Reuters reports.

He is trained at Gouvieux by Mikel Delzangles.

• Makfi won by a length and a-quarter from Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs.

Special Duty won the One Thousand Guineas on promotion.

She finished second by a nose to Jacqueline Quest, who was relegated after an inquiry.

Special Duty gave trainer Criquette Head her fourth win in the race.

The filly was ridden by Stephane Pasquier.

Makfi was bred by the Shadwell Stud of Sheikh Hamdan.

It was decided to sell Makfi in October.

"He had been immature and had problems with his knees and joints," Angus Gold, the racing manager for Shadwell, said.

"I feel bad. It's hard enough to make stallions and I've just gone and sold one."

Makfi was sold for 26,000 guineas at Tattersalls, a price that was recouped 10 times over by Parisian-based owner Matthieu Offenstadt.

Makfi collected 227,080 ($NZ491,281) first prize.

"The owner wanted a son of Dubawi and I went to the sales and found him one. He was a good-looking horse," Delzangles said.
