Tommy Hazlett, the former jumps jockey, has been appointed apprentice jockey mentor by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.
He will begin work in the newly created position on October 11. Hazlett (40) will continue to be based at Ashburton where his partner, Pam Gerard, is a trainer.
Hazlett announced his retirement from race riding last month. He rode in New Zealand, Australia, England and Ireland.
NZTR said it was envisaged that Hazlett would ride track work with probationers and travel widely to provide support for apprentices.

• Trainer Mike Moroney has made gear changes on Monaco Consul in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Sunday, AAP reports.
The Victoria Derby winner has a near-side blinker and a bubble-cheeker on for the first time. The pacifier and cross-over noseband have been removed.
Stewards said Monaco Consul had hung in when seventh in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington at his last start on September 4.
"I'm really happy with him. When he galloped here before the Victoria Derby last spring, he was all at sea but now he's far more professional and going to the line a lot straighter," Moroney said.
"He's forward enough now and getting close to his right distance. So from here on we should start to see something from him."
