He gave Riccarton trainer Pam Robson her third win in the race. Robson won with Lord Gesmo in 1991 and Ranger in 1999.
Finian's Rainbow is part-owned by octogenarian Cam Greenwood, of Christchurch, who raced Ranger.
He races Finian's Rainbow with Robson and Amanda Wilkie, of Christchurch.
Wilkie bought out a share held by Ross McNeil, who formerly trained with Robson.
McNeil bought Finian's Rainbow for $3000 as a 2yr-old at the 2004 South Island sale when the son of Monolith and Glocca Morra was offered by Lloyd Monehan, of Cambridge. Finian's Rainbow is the first foal of Glocca Morra, an Oak Ridge mare who won over 2100m.
Finian's Rainbow is unbeaten in four starts on heavy tracks.
Robson has no plans for Finian's Rainbow.
"He is not 100% sound and I will just have to see what races are available," she said.
Finian's Rainbow, who has won five races from 27 starts, has bone spurs on a knee.
He was ridden yesterday by leading rider James McDonald, who was also successful on the 2yr-old Regal Flame, taking his tally for the season to 98 wins, a lead of three over Sam Spratt.
