Racing: Genius extends record

Genius recorded his 11th win from 15 starts this season when successful at New Plymouth on Tuesday.

The 9yr-old trotter, trained by Michelle Wallis for her husband Bernie Hackett, his mother, Nancy Hackett, Jenny Butt, of Christchurch and Doug McKenzie, of Rangiora, won six races in a row early in the season.

He had a break from racing of close on four months from early December and has returned with a flourish to win his last three races including a double on the grass at Hawera from 40m handicaps.

Genius began racing in July, 2003 and won at Addington at his second start as a 3yr-old when trained by Tim Butt.

He won seven races including the Knight Pistol Handicap at Moonee Valley for Butt.

Genius has a bad knee and he was transferred to Wallis two years ago for the benefit of beach training.

Mr Whoudini recorded his ninth win for the season at New Plymouth on Tuesday.

The 8yr-old gelding has now won 17 races (the last three of end) from 74 starts and $145,452 in stakes.

Mr Whoudini has won 12 races from 42 starts for Whitford trainer Kevin Smith, who races him with Steve Mills, Graham Young and Derek Button, of Auckland.

Mr Whoudini has raced mainly in claiming races since he joined Smith 13 months ago.

"We bought him from Wayne Higgs as it was felt there would be more opportunities for him up here," Smith said.

Mr Whoudini won at his third start for Smith before he was claimed by Derek Balle.

Smith then claimed the horse back for $5000.

The Beach Towel gelding began his racing career with Weedons trainer Nigel McGrath, winning his first start at Rangiora in September, 2004.

He won four races for McGrath and another for Phil Burrows.
