His East Taieri owner-trainer Alan Clark and wife Fiona were battered and bruised when their truck carrying The Fiery Ginga and a horse owned by Lex and Heather Williams, of Waimate, was in a head-on collision with a car near Glenavy, 20km north of Oamaru.
An 18-year-old male passenger in the car died at the scene.
The Fiery Ginga was heading to Addington for a race that night. He was scratched.
The truck ended up on its side. It was written off.
"The Fiery Ginga was knocked around but nothing serious. The other horse took no harm," Clark said.
The Fiery Ginga received stitches for a minor cut on a hind leg. He returned to East Taieri the next day and has been recuperating in the paddock.
Lex Williams said he did not wish to name his horse.
"I will bring him [The Fiery Ginga] back into work in two or three days and plan to head to Auckland about the 24th of this month," Clark said.
"There is a Sires' Stakes race for him there on April 30, then the Trotting Derby and Cambridge Trotting Stakes," Clark said.
He will be accompanied north by Rhythmic Sun, who ran a bold race for fourth at Invercargill on Saturday when driven by Clark. The 3yr-old Rhythmic Sun has won four races this season.
The Fiery Ginga has won seven races (all against older horses) from 15 starts this season.
He finished a brave third to Shezoneoftheboyz and Kahdon in the New Zealand Trotting Derby at his last start.
Both horses are in contention for the Harness Jewels at Cambridge on June 5.
