Racing: Family record extended at Orari

Minty Mellow, raced by June Nelson, of Geraldine, won the Geraldine Cup at Orari on Saturday.

Nelson bred Minty Mellow, who gave reinsman Patrick O'Reilly his second win in the Geraldine Cup and extended a family record in the race.

O'Reilly drove Snowy Dale to win the race in 1993 for trainer Tony Soal.

Gerard O'Reilly, a brother of Patrick, has won the race driving Gimme A Break (2007), Tomfisher (2006) and Anne Franco (1994).

Pat O'Reilly, father of the brothers, trained and drove Just A Glow to win the 1974 Geraldine Cup.

Minty Mellow is trained at Amberley by Kevin Chapman, who took over the 6yr-old mare four months ago.

He has won two races with Minty Mellow.

Minty Mellow won for Colin and Julie De Filippi last season.

Minty Mellow won three races when trained at Invercargill by Wayne Adams.

The horse was initially trained by Stephen McNally.

"Colin and Julie were cutting down on numbers in their stable and I was available give Minty Mellow a change of environment by way of some beach work," Chapman said. Patrick O'Reilly's daughter, Louise, is the part-owner and trainer of Texas Rose who won a maiden race at Cromwell yesterday.

She races Texas Rose with Jock Austin, of Thailand.

Austin has raced several pacers with Patrick.

They included La Motta (seven wins) and Shea Stadium (three). Brian Anderton and Peter Grant were presented with life membership badges for Gallop South at Cromwell yesterday.

The presentations were made by Murray Acklin, another life member.

Grant is a past president of the Gore Racing Club and he was a founding member of Gallop South, the association of Otago and Southland thoroughbred racing clubs.

Anderton said he had been a member of the New Zealand Racing Conference (now New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing) when it was mooted that clubs become associated to form clusters such as Gallop South.

"I didn't think it would happen," he said.

He has also been prominent as a jockey, trainer, studmaster and has received the highest New Zealand racing award for contribution to excellence.
