Richard Eynon, the New Plymouth jumps jockey, continued his run of success when he rode Tigeriffic to win the $A30,000 Jack Dow Memorial Hurdles at Mornington yesterday.
Eynon won the $33,500 Waikato Steeplechase on Saturday on Mali Juraj. He had won a steeplechase on Quartze at Wingatui on Thursday and also rode over jumps at Paeroa on Friday.
Eynon was a late replacement for Steven Pateman on Tigeriffic, who is trained by Clinton McDonald.
Pateman rode Kerdem to win the previous race, a maiden hurdles.
The $A75,000 Great Southern Steeplechase yesterday was won by Zealous, ridden by Aaron Lynch. Eynon was unplaced on Petushki, whose stablemate Banna Strand finished third.
Zealous (Zabeel-Hameeda) is trained by Eric Musgrove.
Mali Juraj is trained by John Wheeler for George Truby, of Gisborne. He has lived in Italy and San Diego in recent years.
Truby bought Mali Juraj as an untried 2yr-old from breeders Brian and Lorraine Anderton of the White Robe Lodge, North Taieri. Mali Juraj is by Yamanin Vital from the King's Island mare Wings Of Glory. Mali Juraj was transferred to Wheeler for jumping after a maiden flat win in Australia. He has since won three steeplechases.
Karlos, winner of the Waikato Hurdles on Saturday, is bred to jump. His dam, Just Jojo, won the 1996 New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase, the only mare to win the race in the last 80 years.
Sheryl McGlade, the trainer of Karlos with her husband, Roger, prepared Justjo as Sheryl Douglas. Roger owned and trained Krona, winner of the 1988 NZ Two Thousand Guineas. Douglas raced Just Jojo with Nigel and Jen Morrison. She races Karlos with their estates. Karlos is the fourth foal of Just Jojo (by Starjo).
