Racing: The end of a dynasty

The grand standardbred producer Port Medley, who was put down last month, left her 10th individual winner from 14 foals to race when Last Port Of Call, her last foal, was successful at her first start on Sunday at Motukarara.

The win also continued a long association with the bloodline by the Barron family from Makarewa and owner-breeder semi-retired Invercargill businessman Peter Marshall, who lives in Ophir.

The 19yr-old Port Medley (Meddlesome-Sea Dream) left the winners of 57 races.

Her best performer has been Lively Medley (by Live Or Die), a brother to Last Port Of Call.

Lively Medley won 20 races, 15 after he was sold to Australia in 2003 and the other five from the Makarewa stable of Tony Barron, whose brother, Ken, trains Last Port Of Call.

Deadly Medley (four wins) and Livitup Medley (five wins) are also by Live Or Die.

Deadly Medley won three races for Tony Barron and one from the stable of Ken Barron and John Lischner.

Livitup Medley won three races for Tony Barron and two for Ken.

The first foal of Port Medley was Andrel's Dream (by Andrel) and she was bred by D R French.

She won six races, two for Terry May and four for Roy and Barry Purdon in the early 1990s.

Nevele R Stud bred their first foal from Port Medley, her third, in 1991.

He was named Bo Scots Medley (by Bo Scots Blue Chip) and won six races from the stable of Ron Barron, father of horsemen Tony, Ken and Clark.

Other winners followed: Michael's Medley (seven wins), OK Medley (three wins), Holme Medley (two wins) and Falcon's Medley (three wins).

Michael's Medley was trained by Ron and OK Medley and Holme Medley by Tony.

Marshall raced Bo Scots Medley, OK Medley, Lively Medley, Deadly Medley and Falcon's Medley, who was sold to Australia last year.

The 3yr-old pacer Ophirs Dream, bred by Marshall from a mating of Badlands Hanover and OK Medley, won a trial at Gore yesterday from the Tony Barron stable.

Last Port Of Call is raced by clients of the Ken Barron stable at West Melton on lease from Nevele R Stud.

The 2yr-old pacer Erle Dale bettered the qualifying time by 4.9sec when he won a trial by eight lengths at Gore yesterday.

The Western Terror-Cath Hanover gelding, trained by Murray Brown, ran the 1700m in 2.08.8, the final 800 in 56.4, the last 400 in 28.8.

Le Sol, the 2yr-old pacer, who won over a mile in 1.54.3 at Wyndham in February for Tony Stratford, has joined the stable of Mark Purdon and Grant Payne.

Mon Star, the winner of six races for John Hay is now trained by Gareth Dixon.

She's No Fool, qualified as a trotter when she finished fifth in a heat for pacers at the Forbury Park trials on Tuesday.

The 4yr-old mare, trained by Brian O'Connor, recorded 2.52, 3.3sec inside the required time.

No pacers qualified in the first heat on Tuesday.
