El Chico had his third win since joining the Ashburton stable of Jan Hay when successful in the open 1600m race at Riccarton on Saturday.
The Stravinsky gelding, owned by Haunui Farm and R Lam, began racing from the Hay stable in November and has also had four minor placings in 10 starts.
"He has had so much bad luck in the running in most of his races," Hay said.
His other wins have been over 1400m at Riccarton.
Hay will now point El Chico at the Ashburton Autumn Cup (1400m) on her home track on March 19.
Monkey Magic has been retired from the Hay stable.
"She just got too high in the ratings for a three-win horse," Hay said.
Monkey Magic won the $50,000 rating 75 1400m race at Cromwell 12 months ago.
Pukekohe trainer Richard Collett and his apprentice son, Jason, completed back-to-back wins in the Southland Guineas when the filly The Beekeeper was successful on Saturday.
The Collett duo won last year with Alegrio when the race was run at Ascot Park.
Jason was suspended for five riding days and fined $500 for careless riding after his win on Saturday.
He defended a charge that he shifted out at the 500m and checked Our Bee Jay.
He is out from March 7 to 13 inclusive.
Jason Laking, Amelia Denby and Jay Misbah were also suspended for careless riding on Saturday.
Laking, the rider of Dr Dee Bee (race 4), admitted shifting in near the 1000m, causing Overdraft to clip a heel.
He is suspended until midnight on March 11.
Denby, the rider of Waitui Gold in the same race, was found to have shifted out at the 350m, crowding Asthecrowflys, Dr Dee Bee, Abelard and Princess Shyla.
She is out from next Saturday until midnight on March 11.
Misbah, the rider of Royal Flight in race 9, was found to have shifted in near the 900m, causing a check to Ketamada.
He was suspended until midnight on March 11.
Trainer Lisa Vaughan was fined $150 for dual riding engagements for Our Bee Jay.
Mufhasa eclipsed his rivals with an all-the-way win in the $200,000 Otaki Stakes at Otaki yesterday.
The favourite, Wall Street, faded to ninth after racing three three wide.
Mufhasa was ridden by Sam Spratt for trainer Stephen McKee.
They won the Otaki feature last year with Culminate.
