Racing: Day of firsts for Australian driver

Winning is second nature to Amanda Turnbull, but the Victorian-based reinswoman entered new territory at Waikouaiti yesterday.

Turnbull (25) made her mark as one of the best drivers in New South Wales when she won the state premiership in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, with 203 victories in each stanza, and she has already notched up 31 winners as a trainer in Victoria since moving to Shepparton this season.

In bringing up 1000 career wins last year, Turnbull has knocked off a few Australian harness racing milestones already, including becoming the youngest Australian driver to hit the four-figure mark.

However, her well-timed drive on No Mas in the third heat of the youth versus experience drivers' series gave Turnbull two new memories to take home - her first win on New Zealand soil and her first on a grass track.

Not that she has had many opportunities on either, mind you.

Her only previous visit to New Zealand to drive was last year's series at Waikouaiti, and she had to settle for two seconds and a third from her four drives.

''Last year was my first time [on grass] and I haven't been on it again until this year.''

Turnbull is the daughter of leading New South Wales trainer Steve Turnbull and the grand-daughter of Tony Turnbull, who trained the great 1970s Australian pacer Hondo Grattan.

She and partner Nathan Jack are leaving their mark on the Victorian harness racing scene.

Jack is sitting third on the state driving premiership, with 98 wins, and Turnbull's 31 wins leave her in eighth on the trainers' premiership.

''I've started up on my own training a bit. We're going all right, trying to keep the strike rate up.''
