"That will be it. I have got a major operation coming up," Moir said.
Moir (30) said he would undergo surgery for bowel cancer next week.
"I have not been riding over fences as I didn't want to risk being injured." The Wingatui-based Moir has been the principal jumps rider for Brian and Shane Anderton, the trainers of Cheap Date. Moir has ridden the Personal Escort gelding in his three wins from four starts over hurdles. Moir rode Gold Jet to win the 2003 Otago Hurdles for the stable.
Cheap Date had not raced over hurdles since September.
• Borrack won impressively yesterday in his first start over hurdles. He led over the last 1500m and won by 11 and three-quarter lengths.
Borrack is trained at Hunterville by Adrian Bull, who races the Black Minnaloushe gelding with Alister Cuming, a Napier shearing contractor.
Borrack won four races on the flat, including one over 1412m at Seymour as a 4yr-old.
He was at Wingatui yesterday in the care of Angus Mavor, a former Riverton jumps rider, who has worked for Bull for some 20 years. Mavor, who won the 1979 New Zealand Grand National Hurdles on Jack Dugan, predicted a bright future for Borrack.
Mavor was also caring for members of the Kevin Myers stable including Lizac, who was successful in the Otago Steeplechase yesterday.
Lizac was under a hard ride from Cody Singer before the last fence but rallied to regain the lead from Lindisfarne and win by six lengths.
Singer also rode Borrack.
• Danny Frye, who rode some 300 winners as a jockey, won the race for amateur riders yesterday. Frye (48) retired from race-riding about 25 years ago. He resumed riding as an amateur last August.
"The main reason I came back was for my daughter [16-year-old Ashley]. She gets a big buzz out of me riding," Frye said. He is a trainer based at Balcairn.
Daniel Oakden was given permission by stewards to ride Kerry Dance 2.5kg overweight as no other rider was available.
He was fined $100 after he admitted failing to meet his contracted weight.
He was suspended from June 19 to July 14 inclusive for attempting to weigh out without stirrup irons or leathers. He defended the charge.
Kerry Dance dislodged Oakden after a faulty leap at the fence near the 600m. Kerry Dance sustained leg injuries.
Ice Pack was brought down when Daatldomee fell at the 1000m in the Otago Steeplechase. Ice Pack was remounted by Ross Doherty and completed the course to finish fifth, 10 minutes after the fourth horse but within the 20-minute limit.
