Racing: Brownie reserved for day two at Waterlea

Brownie, a dual winner at the Nelson meeting, has been reserved for the second day of the Marlborough meeting on Sunday but he is not guaranteed a start.

Brownie has been scratched from the first day of the meeting at Waterlea tomorrow.

"We are down on staff and it was just too difficult to get up for Friday," Greg Hope, the co-trainer of Brownie, said.

"We are not assured of a start on the second day because the club gives preference to first-day starters."

Brownie was having his first start from the Woodend Beach stable of Greg and Nina Hope when he won at Richmond Park last Friday. The 7yr-old trotter was having his first race for six months. Brownie was successful from a 20m handicap two days later.

Brownie was passed to the Hopes by Rangiora owner-breeder Brian Borcoskie for beach training.

The Armbro Invasion-Brown Brocade gelding won four races when trained by Borcoskie's son, Brent.

"He [Brownie] had leg problems. He had a hitch in his gait and it was very frustrating," Brent Borcoskie said.

Brownie is the first foal of Brown Brocade, who won two races as a pacer and four as a trotter when trained by Borcoskie.

She is a half sister by Rockne Lobell to Silk Brocade, who won 15 races for the Borcoskies. Silk Brocade (by Silk Legacy) won the 1999 NZ Premier Mares Championship at Addington.

Little Boy Blue (Armbro Operative-Robyn Blue) was spelled when he arrived in Australia. He won a trial in 2.01.7 at Ashburton on March.

Sir Lincoln, a free-for-all winner at Alexandra Park last Friday, has been scratched tomorrow night, due to a skin rash.

"He has a bit of rash where his hopples strike and I felt it best to give him time to recover," Ray Green, his trainer, said.

A charge of improper driving against Philip Butcher is set down to be heard on July 11. The charge is related to Butcher driving Misty Magic at Cambridge on May 19.

Misty Magic finished fifth in the race, which was won by Mr Hasani. It is alleged that Butcher restrained Misty Magic to allow stablemate Cowgirls N Indians to improve from a four-wide position to a two-wide position at the 1700m.
