Racing: Best result for family

On paper, it reads simply - The Diamond One returned to Wingatui and defended her group 3 White Robe Lodge Handicap title.

But to sum up the Tale Of The Cat mare's win in that manner would not just be a brief scribble of the victory - it would barely be making a mark on the page.

No-one who was on course at Wingatui yesterday will forget the moments as The Diamond One surged clear to win the group 3 1600m race so comfortably that jockey Rory Hutchings was able to salute the heavens from where the late Steven Anderton might well have been watching - and even lending a hand along the way.

Hutchings, who was engaged by Anderton last Saturday after the meeting was rescheduled to yesterday, had already given the crowd one dream result when Landales Gold won race 3 for the Steven and Claire Anderton training partnership.

''Obviously, there was a little bit of pressure on me today to get the job done for the family,'' Hutchings said after Landales Gold's win.

But the country's leading apprentice had to call on all his skills to get The Diamond One home after she drew terribly in barrier 16 for the $70,000 feature.

''I jumped her out and just had to go back to where I did to get a bit of cover,'' he said.

''We were a bit far back at the half-mile and nothing really went forward in front of me, so I just switched down to the fence in the worst of it, but I was travelling that well, I was happy enough to do so. When we straightened up the gap presented and away she went.''

The salute - which the stipendiary stewards sensibly decided not to fine - was Hutchings' way of acknowledging Anderton in a race which meant so much to the trainer when he won it for the first time last year.

''All group races are special but this one probably meant just a little bit more with the circumstances around it,'' Hutchings said.

''I came down with a job to do and I'm just so happy to do it for the Anderton family.''

Part-owner Tony Dennis - who bred and races the mare with brothers Ray, Martin and Joe - was still getting to grips with the occasion at the stables after the presentation.

''It's what we wanted, isn't it, with the whole situation. It couldn't have worked out better,'' Dennis said.

''Claire [Anderton's wife] and Hec [Anderton's father] have been under pressure since Monday and to keep the horse up to scratch.

''They've had help from Terry [Kennedy] and the rest - the whole Wingatui crew. They're all pulling together and helping one another. When it's time to, they do.''

The Dennis brothers had already shared a poignant moment in race 2 with The Bishop - the race before Landales Gold prevailed.

''It's great that we could win a race on a day for Steven,'' Dennis said after The Bishop's win.
