Racing: Arden's Concord well placed to repeat

West Plains trainer Matt Saunders sees no reason why Arden's Concord cannot rack up another win when he lines up at Ascot Park tomorrow - just do not ask him what That Cat is going to do.

Arden's Concord was a smart winner in the c1 grade at Winton on September 5 and gets a bonus run in the grade as that win was in a junior drivers' race.

''It's the same grade and not a big field,'' Saunders said.

''It's a nice wee field but he raced most of them last time. Hopefully, we think he may have improved a wee bit again. He can make mistakes - that's the only thing - but other than that, we expect him to go pretty close.''

Those mistakes were on show at Gore last month when the 4yr old made contact with a sulky wheel and broke very early in the race, blowing his chances.

The pacer's gait was rough in the initial stages at Winton before he began pacing smoothly.

''Maybe after getting knocked over the time before, it was in his mind, but he can do the odd thing wrong,'' Saunders said.

The last 200m of his Winton win hinted at the son of Panspacificflight's potential as he pulled away from outside the leader to win comfortably by two lengths.

''He hasn't really known how to fill his hobbles and rip into it but each time he's going out, he's doing that better and better.''

Arden's Concord is owned by Wendy Muldrew, Brian Sceats and Westwood Beach trainer Graeme Anderson, who sent the gelding south for a change of scenery.

''Graeme did us a favour sending us a nice one down and he's doing a good job.''

The ''new surroundings'' angle might also work for Big Bad John, who joins Saunders' stable from Kirstin Barclay's establishment on the other side of Invercargill, and lines up in race 3.

''We're looking for the change of scenery with him. He's working really nice - I don't know if he's just a good track worker - but he could sneak into the money.''

Which brings us to That Cat who lines up in race 4.

The formline - X09XP0 - tells you about the bad part of his game, but Saunders knows the ability is there somewhere. After all, the 4yr old beat the well regarded Star Fantasy at the Gore workouts last month.

''He could win, but he could knock the whole field over too. I don't know what's going to happen,'' Saunders said.

''I'll send him out and shut the eyes and see what happens. He's the quietest horse in the world at home and at the workouts, then you get to race day and something changes.

''If you came out for a drive or anyone came out [to Saunders' property], and I had to pick a horse to put someone on, it would be him.''

With a few more starts, the stewards' notes on That Cat might start to rival War and Peace, but Saunders thinks the best place for the gelding is in front.

''If he behaves, he could win that race no trouble, but I wouldn't put the house on it,'' he said.

''He tends to relax better in front so we will and try and get there, and see if he relaxes.''
