Tentrack records at Forbury Park raceway last season are a reflection of a different track surface and a new track-grooming implement.

The replacement of the metal-chip track topping with sand two and a-half years ago has led to a much faster surface.

A track conditioner bought 12 months ago has aided the process.

"The club has been pro-active in pursuit of providing the best track," Ken McFarlane, the track manager at Forbury Park, said.

"The metal chip was graded off by Alan Watson from Christchurch and replaced with a mixture of two blends of sand."

The new conditioning implement was bought from Australia at a cost of $37,000.

It is similar to a conditioner used on tracks at Addington, Ashburton and Cambridge.

The club had a problem with the base of the track 16 months ago, causing a meeting to be abandoned and another transferred to Addington.

"We had issues with the base crumbling.

John Denton, the National track curator, oversaw remedial work and we are now in a position to do it ourselves."

A key to the work is a coarse lime obtained from Canterbury used to create a new base.

The 2yr-old pacer Charge Forward set a record for all ages on the track when he won a heat of the Sires' Stakes over 1700m (mobile) in 2.02.6, a 1.56 mile rate, in March.

He was having his first start.

He could only manage a fourth in another five starts before he was put aside early in June.

He is among horses Steven Reid is training in a sole capacity this season.

Lionels Meddle ran a 1.56.9 rate for 2200m (mobile) in May.
