Notable sustains Tapanui link for Anderton family

A human and equine family association with Tapanui Racing Club meetings was extended to 70 years when Notable won at Gore on Sunday.

Notable, trained by Brian and son Shane Anderton at Wingatui, is a 5yr-old mare by Danzighill from Lal's Gift.

She is raced by her breeders, Brian Anderton and his brother Hec.

Lal's Gift is by Noble Bijou from Princess Mellay, by Mellay from Princess Ermine, by Beaumaris from White Robe, by Sir Galloway from Pink Robe, by Pink Coat.

Pink Robe won the Tapanui Handicap, the feature race at the Tapanui meeting in February, 1940.

Pink Robe was trained at Wingatui by Hector Anderton (father of Brian and Hec).

She was ridden by their uncle, Bert Powell.

That was the last of 15 wins for the mare, who also successful over hurdles.

Pink Robe was bought by her trainer with White Robe at foot after she had left five foals.

Her descendants have achieved major success for the Anderton family.

Anderton sen stood Sir Galloway, a Paper Money stallion he led round the district on a bicycle in the 1940s.

Pink Robe left three foals to Sir Galloway.

White Robe gave Brian his first win as a jockey at Wyndham in October, 1950.

She won at the Tapanui meeting at 1951.

Brian gave the name to his stud and training establishment.

The champion stallions Mellay and Noble Bijou stood at White Robe Lodge, now based at North Taieri.

Princess Mellay, raced by Alice Anderton (wife of Hector) won the Tapanui Cup in 1970 when ridden by Jim Pankhurst.

Princess Mellay had won the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton a month earlier in the hands of John Dowling at odds of 25 to one.

She had won the NZ Oaks at Riccarton in 1969 and repeated her NZ Cup win in 1971 with Bob Skelton the rider.

Princess Mellay left a high-class galloper in Prince Majestic, Rock Crystal (Great Northern Steeplechase) and Bi Noble, who won the 1986 Tapanui Cup when trained by Hec Anderton and ridden by Paul Richards.

The meeting was held at Tapanui until 1997.
