Negus had based himself at Waikouaiti for the previous eight years before returning to Burnham last year, so the win of the Waikouaiti bred Quick As A Trick puts Negus's name alongside his father, Bob, who won the race with Kran in 1969.
''Obviously, having been a Waikouaiti boy for eight years, I'm pretty pleased that horse was good enough [to win],'' Negus said.
The 3200m grass track feature fitted into the 4yr old's schedule as he returned home from a six week stint at Tony Barron's Makarewa stables shortly before his meritorious third in the Central Otago Cup.
''[Barron] has freshened him up after that Invercargill Cup and he's done really well.
''I sent Delightful Dash and Music for the same thing and I think the experience will be really good for them in the long run. It just strengthens them up.''
Quick As A Trick's third at Omakau, along with two good runs at Ascot Park in the Northern Southland and Invercargill cups, left driver Nathan Williamson with plenty of confidence going into the race.
''I thought on the form, he was probably the horse to beat,'' he said.
''He was third behind Isaiah and Meticulous and wasn't a long way away and then he was fifth in the Invercargill Cup after doing plenty of work in what was a lot stronger field than this one.''
Williamson sent the long striding pacer forward to take the lead with 2100m to go due to the circumstances of the race.
''I just landed parked and I thought I would go forward and look for the lead,'' he said.
''He's a beautifully relaxed horse _ he was a wee bit lazy in front so I elected to take a trail when something came and he was quite classy in the end.
The horse was co bred by Barrie Barber, of Waikouaiti, who sold him to Queensland owner Greg Brodie after qualifying him as a 2yr old.
Barber is the co owner of Delightful Dash, who will remain with Barron.
''We've left Delightful Dash down there until after the Jewels. She can earn more money down there,'' Negus said.
As for Quick as A Trick, he will not be heading too far from home in the coming weeks.
''He probably deserves a week in the paddock.''
