Gift mare rewards owners

Levi Lowe, who was successful at Forbury Park on Thursday night, is the second winner Paul and Brendan Duffy, of Seaward Downs, have bred and raced out of Chipalong, a mare they were given.

The father and son Duffys were given Chipalong by Ronnie Macdonald, of Invercargill, when she was 14 and had not foaled for two years.

Her earlier foals were all winners - Macadandy, Oidunnoh, Dark Vision (Australia) and Chip McCool.

The second foal the Duffys bred from Chipalong was Rushmore, who won two of his three starts last season before he was sold to Australia.

He was trained by Kirk Larsen, who has Levi Lowe.

Chipalong is in foal to Elsu.

Chipalong, a winner by Apollo's Way, is out of Chipaluck, winner of nine races including the 1985 New Zealand Oaks, Ladyship Stakes and Timaru Cup when owned and trained by Macdonald.

Alta Crusade is required to give a satisfactory trial after leaving stride in his race on Thursday night.

The 2yr-old tangled after 200m, checking Chasing Answers and Under Enemy Fire.

He tangled again at the 800m.

The stipendiary steward, Kylie Williams, ordered the trial.

Monaro Miss was declared a late scratching in race 7.

It was found that Monaro Miss was rearing as the field was dispatched.

She had a sulky shaft over her rump and driver Matthew Williamson was not properly seated.

Barrack, the favourite, who finished second in race 11, was checked and tangled near the 300m.

It was found that the incident was caused by Mossdale Allan, who tangled after striking the right side wheel of its sulky.

Mitchell Kerr, the driver of Thiseas, was charged with careless driving after the race.

He was held to have caused a check to Splash Of Cullen, who tangled early.

Handy Knight was checked.

The hearing was adjourned due to the unavailability of a senior horseman to represent Kerr.

Perdition and Lucy Hest were declared unruly for standing start races at the request of their trainers.

Commander In Chief tangled and ran in, locking wheels with Saratoga Spa in the early stages of race 5, with both horses losing all chance.

Midewin stumbled near the 900m in the same race after pulling a shoe, tangled and locked wheels with Langham Gold with resultant interference to Royal Spin and Falcons Courage.
