Female jockeys dominant

It took a gem of a ride from the magic man to spoil a girls' day out at Timaru yesterday.

The immense skill among New Zealand's female riding ranks was on show as women rode the first seven winners, and looked set to claim every race, on yesterday's rescheduled nine-race card

The haul was made up from victories by Alysha Collett, Kylie Williams, Tina Comignaghi, Amanda Morgan and Samantha Wynne.

As history looked to be in the making, Chris ``Magic'' Johnson produced an inch-perfect ride on Misty Trella in race 8 to spoil the party.

Johnson deliberately positioned his mount away from the running rail throughout the race on the heavy Timaru track, before timing his run to beat Opihi Jade and Krishna Mudhoo in a close finish.

Collett rode One Way Ticket to victory in yesterday's final race, giving female riders eight wins from yesterday's nine races.

A host of senior journalists and racing historians contacted by The Otago Daily Times was at odds over whether female riders had won every race at a New Zealand thoroughbred meeting.

The feat is known to have been accomplished in Australia.

At Mount Gambier, South Australia, in January, 2015, Emily Finnegan, Clare Lindop and Holly McKechnie combined to win all eight races.

Misty Trella's potentially record-spoiling win sealed a treble of victories for Canterbury trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman.

The father and son duo also notched wins when Amanda Morgan won on Eagle Magic in race 2 and when Samantha Wynne got Gloss to the post first in race 7.

Eagle Magic has a link to the biggest headline-grabbing female talent in Australasian racing.

The 6yr-old mare's dam, Westmagic, is a half-sister to the dam of Australian sensation Winx.

Although they may share a similar pedigree it does seem Eagle Magic is going about her career in much different fashion than her famous relative is going about hers.

Eagle Magic's win yesterday was her second victory in 40 race-day attempts.

She previously won at Gore in September last year when trained by Tapanui trainers Nikki and Barrie Blatch.
