Battling galloper to take on on wonder mare Winx

Flemington racecourse will host the breathtaking and the bizarre on Saturday.

The breathtaking comes in the form of glamour mare Winx who shoots for her 21st consecutive victory in the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m.

The bizarre comes in the form of battling Skyfire, the winner of three of 28 starts in country Victoria, who will have to defy all odds to beat the superstar.

The sight of a 6yr-old battler being nominated to take on the best mare in the world sent the racing world - especially those on social media - into a spin yesterday.

However, that does not faze Mornington trainer Amy Johnston who is happy to give her horse an unlikely shot at group 1 glory.

''Every horse in Australia and every trainer had the opportunity to throw a nomination in if they so desired,'' she said.

''We decided we'd like to take up that opportunity and give the horse a chance of earning some money because he's not going to do that standing in his stable on Saturday.''

As far as Johnston is concerned, haters are going to hate and she could not care less.

''The people I care about are my owners and they've wanted to have a crack and that's what we're doing,'' she said.

Bookmakers have Skyfire at 300-to-one odds to win the Turnbull, which could be considered a shorter price than the horse's form warrants.

The 6yr-old last raced at on his home track on Saturday, finishing fifth of seven runners and before that he ran last of seven horses at Geelong.

Skyfire's most recent win came over 2200m at Sale in December last year.

Despite the world being against him, there is one upside to the Skyfire's prospects before of the Turnbull.

The presence of Winx could result in the race's nominations dwindling from seven, giving Skyfire's connections hope of a group 1 placing even if he runs last.

That is something they will be hoping happens as Skyfire's owners already stand to win a minimum of $A10,000 ($NZ10,950) if the horse runs last or second-last of seven runners.

But that increases to $A12,500 for five runners, $A22,500 for four runners, $A45,000 for three runners and a whopping $A90,000 if the battler runs second in the most unlikely of match races against the champion Winx.

Should the horse win, the Turnbull winner's cheque of $A300,000 would likely pale in comparison to the movie deals and storied status that Skyfire would give his connections if he could pull off one of the biggest upsets in racing history.
