Andertons capable of another big haul

White Robe Lodge trainers Brian and Shane Anderton return to the Melbourne Cup day meeting at Wingatui today with every chance of repeating their five race-winning effort of last year.

Of their 11 runners, Brian Anderton rates Gallant Defender (race 3) and Gallant Boy in race 5, today's feature, as two of his best chances.

``I have got some nice runners there. I think Gallant Defender is back going all right and Gallant Boy, he has come up really good.''

The stable has Raise You Ten, Willow and Taieri Gem in race 7, a rating 75 over 1200m.

Raise You Ten, who has the benefit of Corey Campbell's 3kg allowance, is ahead of his two stablemates in early betting markets, but Anderton does not see much between the trio.

``Willow has come up really well, but the three runners I have got in that race are all a chance.

``Raise You Ten I have got a lot of time for. I think he is a decent sort of horse.''

The Andertons missed out in the first four races of last year's meeting but then won five of the last six races. But with the maiden Riding High looming as a big chance in race 1, the stable could be winning a lot earlier this year.

``I have a bit of an opinion of that horse,'' Anderton said.

The master trainer also thinks another maiden, Zabay, is a strong chance in race 7 after going close in three of her four starts this campaign.

``Zabay is just getting knocked off in its races but I think the longer straight at Wingatui will suit it better.''

The stable will also be represented in race 1 with Erin's Babe, race 2 with Fascinate, race 4 with Turbulence and race 9 with Perceptive.

Unlike last year, Brian Anderton will not be able to watch Who Shot Thebarman, who he bred at White Robe Lodge, compete in the Melbourne Cup.

But the horseman is applauding the Waller stable for scratching the horse because of an elevated temperature, and not taking any risks by running the grand stayer.

``It is disappointing but the welfare of the horse is the main thing and I admire Chris Waller and the owners for their decision.''

With his southern bloodlines and his longevity already well established, Anderton cannot see why Who Shot Thebarman could not return for his fourth cup next year.

``I won the New Zealand Cup with a 10yr-old - Watallan.''

Fellow North Taieri horseman Steven Princecould also have a big day.

Prince lines up a strong team of seven horses, headed by his classy performer, Passito. Win No5 looks well within reach of the 5yr-old in rating 85 company in race 2.

Passito resumed with a big, but somewhat surprising, win at Gore last month followed by quiet run at the Wingatui jumpouts last week.

Passito's biggest dangers could come in the form of two progressive Canterbury raiders in Tomm Jones and Wize Act.

Prince has a dual-pronged attack on race 4 with Brunello, who will race in blinkers for the first time, and first-starter Spanky.

The trainer has an even bigger hand in race 6 with four horses entered.

First-starters Cocee and Hiho have shown enough at recent jumpouts to suggest they have their fair share of ability. The pair are joined by Plowshare, who showed handy form in his last preparation, and possibly Never You Mind, who is the race's first emergency.

Two young local apprentices have their chance to stamp their mark today. White Robe Lodge apprentice Corey Campbell has a capacity book of nine rides, headed by the classy Our Teddy Boy. The Steve Tyler-trained galloper kicked off his 3yr-old season with a booming win at Timaru last month.

Campbell also rides handy winning chances in Hayley Maree in today's feature, race 5, as well as the Anderton pairing of Zabay(race 6) and Raise You Ten (race 7).

Fellow Wingatui apprentice Sha Wahab also has strong chances among his book of four rides. Wahab will partner Tomm Jones in race 2, Mia Mamma in race 7, Livadream in race 8 and Majic El in race 9.
