Jordan McEwan looks like he might struggle to lift a bowl, let alone swing it the direction of the jack.

But the 29kg 10-year-old rookie lawn bowls player is quickly making a name for himself around Dunedin’s greens.

He teamed up with his father, former Otago golf No 1 Brent McEwan, and Ross Stevens to contest the Dunedin Centre champion of champions men’s triples final at Wakari Bowling Club earlier this week.

They were representing St Clair, but lost the final 23-14 to the St Kilda team of Murray Wilson, Reuben Silva and Owen Bennett.

St Kilda will go on to represent the Dunedin Centre at the nationals in Auckland in July.

But the St Clair triple got a certificate and some prize money — $67 each, which the young man has ferreted away.

Jordan has also made two semifinals this season. He teamed up with his dad in the pairs and was part of the St Clair men’s fours team which made the semifinals as well.

No-one is prouder than dad.

"He’s had a wee bit of practice here and there when we’ve [mum and dad] been playing, but this is his first competitive season," Brent said.

"He’s going really well. He’s a natural at most sport and he has picked it up well."

Speaking of picking it up, lawn bowls are not that light — but Jordan is, though.

He is just wee fellow.

"A lot of people ask how he does it, but he gets them away really smooth."

It is not how they get there really, but how close they get to the jack. And Jordan’s radar is improving with every outing.

"He has picked it up a bit faster than we thought he would. He lives for it. He loves it.

"And this season has probably been my most enjoyable."
