Weightlifting: Veterans record falls to Appleby at championships

Dunedin's Peter Appleby broke an Otago veterans record at the Otago Olympic weightlifting championships at the Mosgiel gymnasium last weekend.

Appleby was competing in the veteran category 5 over-105kg class and set the record with his snatch (85kg), clean and jerk (110kg) and total (195kg).

Two Invercargill lifters came up for the championships and also broke records.

Anton de Croos set a New Zealand record in the category 7 (over age 70) 69kg class with his snatch (44kg), clean and jerk (54kg) and total (98kg).

Douglas Sekone-Fraser set an Otago record in the men's under-20 77kg class with his snatch (95kg), clean and jerk (120kg) and total (215kg).

Dunedin's Special Olympians also competed at the championships and six of them qualified for the Special Olympics National Games.

They are George Ross and Glyn Miller in the masters 1 67.5kg class, Aaron Wild (open) 67.5kg class, Grant McKenzie (open) 82.5kg class, Nathan Begley and Dominic Crowe in the open 100kg class.

The best performed in the Otago championships last weekend were McKenzie, who won the 82.5kg class with a total of 240kg, and Crowe, who won the 100kg class with a total of 245kg.
