Otago University rower Charlotte Darry has won gold at the world under-23 championships in Canada.

Darry and former Otago University rower Orla Fitzgerald were part of the women’s coxed four, alongside Isobel Elidadis-Watson, Jane Schellekens and cox Oliver Duncan, that won the title at St Catherines yesterday.

They became the first New Zealand crew to win gold in the women’s event.

After losing to the United States in the preliminary events, New Zealand stormed through each mark to finish in 7min 03sec, ahead of the United States in 7min 04.83sec.

Soon after the women’s success, Oli Welch and Josh Vodanovich won gold in the men’s best pair to claim

New Zealand’s first title in the event as well.

They finished in 6min 19.70sec in a world best time to lower the previous record of 6min 19.88sec set by South Africa in 2022.

Dunstan rowers Jack Pearson and Angus Kenny were due to race in the men’s quad B final overnight.

In the world under-19 championships — also being held in Canada — Dunstan rower Marley King Smith and crew mate James Dimock are scheduled to race in the men’s double semifinal tomorrow morning (NZ time).
