Thomsen and Polak take their fifth consecutive women’s doubles title

Otago has shown its continued class in badminton women’s doubles.

Lucy Thomsen and Pingkan Polak combined to win their fifth consecutive title at the South Island-Otago Open in Dunedin over the weekend.

Coming off a win at last weekend’s Wellington Open, the duo beat Jeimi Cornejo and Tegan West, 21-16, 21-14 in the final.

That followed a semifinal which included a marathon second set, the Otago duo winning out 26-24 over Adithi Alexander and Claudia Smith to progress to the final in straight sets.

Wellington North’s Luke Falvey claimed his third triple crown — titles in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles — of the season, having also done so at the Wellington and Manawatu Opens.

Falvey claimed a dominant 21-11, 21-11 win over Jake Dickson in the men’s singles final. He also teamed with Jun Kit Ng to beat Dylan Chan and Ryan Wong 21-16, 21-18 in the men’s doubles final.

He completed the triple crown when he combined with women’s singles champion Jenny Zhu to win the mixed doubles 15-21, 21-17, 21-12 over top seeds Avinash Shastri and Tegan Weston.
