Tame Govaerts was the pick of the Otago swimmers through the first three days of the national age-group championships in Wellington.

The 15-year-old Zenith swimmer had two gold medals, a silver and a couple of Otago records in the bag with two days left in the annual meet.

Govaerts won and broke his own Otago age-group records in both the boys 15 years 50m and 200m breaststroke, while he nabbed silver in the 100m breaststroke.

He touched the wall in 30.76sec in the 50m final and 2min 27.52sec in the 200m final. Courtland Ellis, Andrew Trembath (both Neptune) and Isobel Ryan (Oamaru) also won gold medals on the first three nights of finals.

Ellis, who also won silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 50m backstroke, snared his gold in the boys 15 years 200m individual medley in 2min 11.31sec.

Trembath won the boys 17-18 years 100m backstroke in 56.06sec, which is within the qualifying standard for the world junior championships in Singapore later in the year.

However, at 18 years old, Trembath is too old to compete. Second-placed Wilrich Coetzee (North Shore) qualified in 56.55sec.

Trembath also claimed silver in the boys 17-18 years 200m individual medley, finishing just 0.21sec behind Coetzee.

Ryan, who leaves for the University of Wyoming in the United States on a swimming scholarship at the end of July, recorded a thrilling win in the girls 17-18 years 50m freestyle.

She pipped Emma Godwin (North Shore) by 0.03sec to win in 26.92sec.

Caitlin Deans (Neptune) also had a decent first three days to the meet, securing silver in the girls 15 years 200m and 400m freestyle, and bronze in the 400m individual medley.

Devon Familton (Neptune) also got on the medal board, winning bronze in the girls 15 years 200m individual medley.

Otago's boys under-15 relay team of Govaerts, Ellis, Ben Carr and Jaxson MacDonald-Piner claimed silver in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays, while the girls under-15 team of Cecilia Crooks, Danielle Walsh, Gabrielle Trotter and Deans took silver in their 4x200m final.

The fourth night of finals was contested last night, and the meet will wrap up after tonight's finals.
