Swimming: Gillespie does well at open water championships

Dunedin swimmer Stefannie Gillespie recorded two podium finishes at the New Zealand Open Water Championships in Taupo at the weekend.

The 20-year-old Zenith swimmer finished third in both the women's open 10km and 5km races, which were contested by 68 and 76 swimmers respectively.

Gillespie finished the gruelling 10km race in 2hr 14min 19sec, just 1sec ahead of fourth-placed Bridget Maher, of Auckland, but well behind winner Charlotte Webby, of Taranaki, who crossed the line in 2hr 9min 30sec.

Webby also won the 5km race, when she finished in 1hr 3min 31sec. Gillespie was third in 1hr 4min 51sec, just 2sec behind second-placed Sammy Winward, of Christchurch.

Gillespie's brother, Matthew (18), also of Zenith, was the only other Otago swimmer competing in Taupo.

He finished third in the open Epic 2.5km race in 33min 35sec.

Otago's best swimmers will be in action at the Otago 13 and over championships at Moana Pool, starting next Wednesday.
