Elite Otago swimmers Shane Patience, Bryn Murphy and Katie Kenneally will be using this weekend's Neptune carnival as a warm-up for next week's Oceania Championships in Christchurch.

Patience (17) has a busy racing schedule over the next month and will also compete in the World Youth Championships in Mexico in July.

Murphy (Waves), who missed selection for the Olympics, and Patience will compete in the 1500m freestyle at Christchurch.

Kenneally (Taieri) is a breaststroke specialist and gained selection after winning a gold medal in the girls aged 16 200m breaststroke in 2min 42.31sec at the national age-group championships.

She also won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke in 1min 15.52sec.

Patience (Waves) achieved his main goal when named in the team for the world championships in Monterey, Mexico, from July 9 to July 13. He made a significant advance in his career when he erased Danyon Loader's name from the New Zealand record book by winning the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle at the national age-group championships. Patience's gold medal-winning time of 15min 45.35sec in the men's aged 17 and 18 grade was 7.20sec faster than Loader's 1993 long-course time.

Patience and Murphy will race the 400m and 800m freestyle events today, and then have a training session at Moana Pool tomorrow before travelling to Christchurch.

"We have started our taper for the Oceania championships and will be using the Neptune races as part of our warm-up," coach Andy Adair said.

There are 325 swimmers from throughout the South Island competing in the Neptune carnival, with a large contingent coming from Canterbury and Southland.

Wharenui has the most swimmers with 47, Waves 39 and Neptune 31.

There are 22 swimmers from the Osca training squad competing.

One swimmer to watch from Christchurch is Jack Nash (Jazzi), who is competing in the freestyle and butterfly events.

He has a best time of 2min 08.78sec for the 200m butterfly.

The new pool is helping the Oamaru club to make its mark in swimming with the club's best swimmer being Jeremy Tasker (13) expected to excel in the 50m backstroke, 100m and 200m individual medley and the freestyle events.

The session times at Moana Pool are: Saturday, 8.30am to 12.30pm, and 4pm to 8pm; Sunday 8.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5.30pm.
