Dr David Devere has a job which requires calmness.

But there was nothing calm about him yesterday afternoon, on his day off, as he watched his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Dr Devere, who is an anaesthetist at Dunedin Hospital, was riding every play for the Steelers, at the Terrace Bar in Dunedin yesterday.

He grew up just outside Pittsburgh and has been to the old home of the Steelers, Three Rivers Stadium, many times.

He had been in Dunedin for a couple of years.

He said it was great the Steelers had made the playoffs and he was amazed how the side had got all the way to the Super Bowl after a slow start to the season.

After the game, he said it was a typical Steelers performance, leaving it late to win, although he never lost faith in his team.

"We always take it right down to the wire, leave it to the last minute."

It was more a case of relief than celebration after the narrow Steelers win.

"I'm exhausted now. That is what the Steelers do to you."

Dr Devere had watched the game with Irish tourist David Corrigan, who was wearing a replica Steelers jersey.
