Taieri's junior squash players should be a force to be reckoned with after having their games tuned up by New Zealand Squash's big guns Lance Beddoes and Evan Williams.

Beddoes and Williams were in Mosgiel yesterday coaching a junior clinic before showing off the skills they used to represent New Zealand at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in an exhibition match.

The popularity of squash in the Taieri region is on rise, so the pairing had plenty of talent to work with during their clinic.

Up to 30 juniors regularly play at the club which has a membership of 120 players who play socially and competitively.

The upward curve in playing numbers is being driven by the club's creativity in attracting new members, president Justine Dahlenburg said.

The Taieri Squash Club would continue its drive to boost its numbers and welcomed new members of all ages and experience, she said.

Coaching is part of life for the country's elite squash players and a way of supporting their careers.

"I love it, coming to different places. I have never been to Mosgiel and taking pro squash to clubs that would not usually see it," Beddoes said.

The other main part of a pro- quash player's income come from playing in tournaments and exhibition matches all around New Zealand.

"Exhibition [matches] and tournaments pay the way for us and help a lot."

That means New Zealand's best squash players need to be at their best almost weekly, rather than peaking for specific annual championships like many other sports.

" Every tournament is big for us now.

"When you play you want to win because there are ranking points and prize money," Williams said.

"We are not defined, like other sports are where there are world championships every two years or four years where they have to peak for. We have to peak for every weekend."
