St Kilda top club at South Island champs

The St Kilda Surf Life Saving club came out on top at the South Island IRB championships at Warrington Beach on Saturday.

St Kilda recorded 120 points, St Clair finished on 116 and Chistchurch club Sumner was third on 95.

With the surf relatively small and the weather fine overhead, crews showed their wares throughout the day.

In the under-19 men's assembly, the St Kilda team of Abe MacCormick, Duncan New and Meg Sayers won. The team also claimed the under-19 single rescue.

In the open women's team race, the St Clair team of Alesha Aherns, Briar Taylor, Maysha Aherns and Carla and Stephanie Laughton finished first.

The under-20 women's assembly rescue was won by the St Kilda team of of Hannah Prout, Hannah Rogers and Shanae Sparrow while the under-20 women's rescue was won by the St Clair team of Alesha Aherns, Anaia Wiparata, James Coombes, Maddison Crawford and Mikayla Garforth.

The St Kilda team of Fiona Schultz, Jack Nicholl, Natalie Ashton, Nic Brice, Riley Allibone and Sarah Thomas won the open mixed grade.

In the under-19 men's rescue, the St Clair team of Wiparata, Flynn Steel and Jackson Aluesi won the race while another team from St Clair - consisting of the Laughton sisters and Wiparata - won the open women's tube rescue. This team also won the open women's single rescue.

Wiparata, Steel, Alesha Aherns, Aluesi and Coombes combined to win the under-19 mass rescue. The Laughton sisters, back competing in the water for the first time in four years, combined with Wiparata, Issac Davies and Lucy Duncan to win the open women's rescue.

Wiparata, Niam Chronican and Scott Fraser won the open men's assembly rescue.

Teams will now focus on the national IRB championships which take place at Waihi Beach early next month.
