The year 12 Otago Girls High School pupil was named junior sports woman of the year at the Maori Sports Awards in Auckland on Saturday.
The talented 17-year-old of Ngai Tahu descent was nominated for her exploits on the basketball court and the touch field.
A speedy point guard and swift midfield player, she represented her country in both codes, playing for the New Zealand under-18 basketball team and under-21 touch team.
"When they called my name, I was really shocked, but it was awesome, too," Turnbull said.
"I was really happy but nervous because I knew I had to make a speech in front of a thousand people. It was freaky but an awesome experience."
Turnbull learnt Te Reo Maori during her first two years at OGHS and part of her acceptance speech was in the language.
Turnbull is the second pupil from the school to win the award in the past four years. Dual cricket and basketball international Suzie Bates scooped the same award in 2007.
Dayna said Bates was a role model for her and she was thrilled to follow in her footsteps.
"I look up to Suzie a lot and, hopefully, I can continue to play two sports like she has managed for as long as I can."
Turnbull also plays cricket, netball and volleyball for the school.
