Cardinals started this season as they ended last season, picking up two comfortable wins in premier grade on Saturday.

Cardinals have won the competition over the past couple of years and are looking to make it three in a row.

They look the team to beat after the opening day on Saturday.

In their early game, Cardinals beat Saints 8-1 and then backed that up with a commanding 12-2 win over Ellis Park.

In the other games, Dodgers lost to Saints 11-4 after beating Ellis Park 8-4.

Cardinals' win over Saints came through a three-run first inning from which Saints could not bounce back.

In the fifth inning, Cardinals again hit three runs with Crete Whaanga getting on base with a bunt and then getting home.

He was followed home later in the inning by Glenn Forrester and Scott Hill.

Doug Hill was then struck out for Cardinals but the damage had been done and Cardinals won the game.

They had no trouble against a young Ellis Park team in the later game.

An eight-run third inning, going right through the line-up, paved the way for the win which ended in four innings.

Dodgers beat Ellis Park thanks to a hard-hitting third inning when they slammed in four runs. The scores were tied one run apiece before shortstop Jamie Robinson scored for Dodgers and Cam Watts and Tane Tuhakaraina chipped in.

Ellis Park hit three runs in the next inning to keep in touch as father and son duo Peter and Adam Mathieson both had runs.

But it was simply not enough and Dodgers scored two more runs in the sixth inning, to extend the lead.

Ellis Park's last turn at bat was a straight three-up and three-down and Dodgers had sealed the win.

In the other game, Saints was always in control against Dodgers, forced this season to do without ace pitcher Ben Watts, who has transferred to Christchurch to further his softball prospects.

The experienced Saints duo of Mike Crowley and Mike O'Neill were part of a four-run third inning while Travis McIntosh also recorded a run.

The game was sealed in the sixth inning, when Saints hit five runs with McIntosh, Crowley and O'Neill again getting among the scoring.
