Softball: A battle, but Saints keep lead

Saints stayed on top of the competition ladder but only after a tight win over Cardinals in Dunedin on Saturday.

The Saints led for most of the match against Cardinals but at the bottom of the fifth innings, a few errors resulted in the game being tied up 5-5.

But at the bottom of the sixth innings, Sam Jones got on base through a fielder's choice and then a triple by Michael King got Jones home, which was ultimately the difference between the sides.

Saints player-coach Mark Ahlfeld had a top game, hitting an automatic home run, while the Cardinals side never gave up.

But Cardinals could not back up its fine effort in the next match and went down to Dodgers 2-9.

It was a match blighted by errors, with Dodgers scoring only three hits while Cardinals had just the two hits.

In the other match, old rivals Dodgers and Ellis Park clashed and the match went to extra innings.

The game was tied up 3-3, at the end of the regulation innings, and in the tie-breaker Dodgers' Scott Cartwright hit it over the fence, as did Jeremy Tisdall, while Ben Watts also scored, giving Dodgers a four-run cushion.

Ellis Park managed only one run in its turn at bat in the extra innings, with Steven Todd scoring the run.

Saints still lead the competition but are closely followed by Ellis Park and Dodgers.
