Snowsports: Storm disrupts schedule

Bad weather on the ski slopes forced a change in schedule for the Winter Games in Wanaka yesterday.

The freestyle cross-country ski races at the Snow Farm were cancelled, the freeski slopestyle competition at the Snow Farm was postponed until tomorrow and halfpipe training schedules at Cardrona Alpine Resort had to be called off.

Planned medal ceremonies in Wanaka have also been postponed until tomorrow.

Games chief executive Arthur Klap said it was "a shame" to cancel the third day of cross-country races after two days of successful racing, but the FIS technical delegate and the Canadian national team were scheduled to leave the country today, while other race officials were also unavailable today.

Setting a 16-day programme this year had been justified because it allowed for flexibility in the schedule, he said.

He was proud of the efforts of volunteers and officials to try to accommodate the changes.

"We've got a one-in-50-years snowstorm, apparently, but everyone seems to be handling it quite well," Klap said.
