Oamaru is becoming the snooker capital of New Zealand after two of its players were selected in the New Zealand under-21 team.

Sam Bond (21) and Healey White (17) are in the four-man New Zealand team for the world under-21 championships in Beijing from July 11 to 19.

The other team members are Louis Chand (Auckland) and Mikey Stewart (Hawkes Bay).

The North Otago Billiards and Snooker Association has had four New Zealand representatives in the last 10 years. The others are Jason Todd and Michael Wilson.

Bond, an IT and computer science student at the University of Otago, was introduced to the sport when he was a pupil at Waitaki Boys' High School seven years ago.

He won his first New Zealand title when he beat Chand in the national under-21 final in Wellington last month. Bond had been runner-up three times in the past.

This will be the fifth time Bond has represented New Zealand overseas. He has also competed in Ireland, Canada and Iran.

Bond is the grandson of Eric Todd, who was the godfather of snooker in Oamaru and coached juniors in the game. His son, Jason Todd, is the president of the North Otago association and the North Otago coach.

Bond's mother, Heather Bond (nee Todd), is manager of the New Zealand team for the third time.

White, a pupil at Waitaki Boys' High School, is one of the most promising younger players in the country and will be representing New Zealand for the first time.

Both players must raise $4000 for their trip to the world championships in China.
