Skiing: Outram skier capped with gold

Paralympian skier Adam Hall, of Outram, has rounded out a successful season with a gold medal at the Wells Fargo world disabled invitational in the United States on Monday.

Hall (20) also took top honours at the event in 2005 and 2007.

The medal placing marked a successful end to his North American series, during which he won seven titles.

He ended the season ranked second in the world in slalom and seventh in the giant slalom events.

The invitational in Colorado is the only race in the series in which disabled skiers compete head-to-head on parallel courses.

He finished the 2008 International Paralympic Committee World Cup tour ranked third in the world in slalom with a podium finish in all his races, including a gold and silver in France and silver in Korea.

Only bad weather stopped him from a securing the top spot, when the second run of the final slalom race of the tour in Hakuba, Japan, was abandoned.

Hall had qualified in first place after round one. An equally successful second run would have taken him to a world No 1 ranking.

Hall started the season ranked 12th in slalom.

As well as his IPC World Cup success, Hall won seven golds at Nor-Am Cup races throughout North America, a mixture of GS, Super G and slalom.

Earlier this year, Hall said he was extremely happy with his achievements, which he hoped were stepping stones to his ultimate goal of winning gold at the Paralympics in 2010.

Hall is a member of the New Zealand Disabled Ski Team and a paralympian and trains under the Winter Performance Programme.

The IPC World Cup is an annual circuit of elite disabled alpine skiing competitions regulated by the IPC and the International Ski Federation.

Events are held across Europe, North America and Asia and are considered the premier competitions in disabled ski racing.
