Wānaka triathlete Braden Currie finished second, behind Australian Matt Burdon, at the Cairns ironman at the weekend, while Kiwi Mike Phillips was third.
All three athletes broke the course record, Burdon also breaking the bike course record. Currie recorded the fastest run of the day but it was not enough to reclaim the championship Currie had previously won three times.
Currie’s performance secured his slot for the ironman world championship in Kona, Hawaii, and he now ranks sixth in the ironman pro series standings. His next race is at Lake Placid on July 21.
