From Taipa in the north, to Tuatapere in the south - they have come from far and wide and from the backblocks for this week's New Zealand area schools sports tournament in Dunedin.

More than 300 athletes in seven sports are competing in the tournament, which began yesterday and finishes on Thursday, event manager Nicole Ross said.

Following regional tournaments, the pupils are separated into four regions: Northland, Central North Island, Top Of The South and South Of The South.

The South Of The South is made up of 53 pupils from the Lawrence, Maniototo, Roxburgh, Twizel, Catlins and Waiau area schools, along with two pupils seconded into sides from South Westland Area School.

Some pupils are playing up to four of the seven sports, which are basketball, netball, volleyball, rugby, football, golf and ki-o-rahi, a traditional Maori ball sport played on a circular field.

New Zealand representative teams will be named on Thursday afternoon, although only the rugby team will take the field in a later fixture.
