Recognition of Grieve’s achievements ‘total shock’

Barbara Grieve is closing in on 20 years as a weightlifting technical official, and this one has definitely been the best.

The Invercargill 60-year-old was selected to officiate at the Tokyo Olympics, which was a tremendous highlight for her.

It was also the culmination of a lot of hard work.

That mahi was recognised by Weightlifting New Zealand recently.

Grieve was awarded the "women in weightlifting" award to recognise her long service and for reaching the pinnacle of the sport.

The presentation was made during the annual meeting on Zoom, and Grieve conceded she was not fully prepared for the announcement.

"You are sort of half-asleep and then I thought, ‘oh my goodness, they’ve actually got Nigel Avery doing the awards’," she said.

"So it was a total shock. It woke me up."

Grieve was part of the jury at the Olympics. Her role was to review refereeing decisions and, if necessary, overturn them.

She plans to continue in the sport and hopes to be selected for the officiating team for the Commonwealth Games in England in July and August.

But what really motivates her is the opportunity to be part of the athlete’s journey.

"I love seeing lifters going from athletes not knowing what they are doing to the joy and confidence they get out of achieving personal bests or getting to national or international events."

Three green lights to that.
